Into the Woods

Did you barely make it through this past week? Want to tell all your problems to take a hike? Then we recommend you grab some popcorn and head out to Disney’s Into the Woods. Based on the popular Broadway play of the same name, with music by Stephen Sondheim, Into the Woods is a mash-up of some of the Brothers Grimm fairy tales. From the first minute, the movie hits you with a Glee like barrage of singing and dancing from characters such as Little Red Riding Hood, the Wolf (briefly yet excellently portrayed by Johnny Depp), Rapunzel, a baker, his wife, two princes, a witch, Cinderella, and a partridge in a pear tree—oh wait, that was a Jack in a bean stalk.
Many of the cast, like Anna Kendrick as Cinderella, Emily Blunt as the Baker’s wife, and Meryl Streep as the Witch, are veterans of the musical genre. But, actors such as Chris Pine and James Corden were surprisingly palatable.
Earlier this week Meryl Streep was nominated for a best supporting actress Oscar and the film was nominated for best costume design and best production design.
The film is heavy on the music and light on the dialog, so be prepared for 124 minutes of fairy tale harmony. That said, if you need a movie that will push any thoughts of the workweek far far away, Into the Woods is the ticket.
